WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Cover Art

The theme of this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is Cover Art. For example:

  • Take your favorite album, book, magazine, or show and choose the image that best represents the selected work.

One of my all time favorite singers is/was Kenny Rankin…and he did a cover version* of the Beatles song “Blackbird”. The song had nothing to do with birds specifically.. but it was inspired by the civil rights movement in the USA, and was to represent a typical woman facing oppression in the era.

*as an aside: from Kenny Rankin’s obituary in 2009: Paul McCartney liked Rankin’s version of the Beatles song Blackbird so much that he asked Rankin to sing it when McCartney and (posthumously) John Lennon were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987.

But the song is called “Blackbird”…so I chose a photo of some black birds. Since this is supposed to be “Cover Art” I  took the liberty and played with my image of blackbirds in assorted photo editing programs and apps:

These birds were having great fun splashing about in my neighbourhood park. Now they have all headed south.

  1. This is my first visit to your blog, and I love what I see. From your About Me section, I see that we have much in common. I am retired (physical therapist) and now enjoying a wonderfully creative time of life. too – mostly quilting and photography. Your cover art picture is a very intriguing mix of photo and painting – and the light and splashes of water make this a stunning image.
