I am playing with Prairie Jill and Miriam. We are working our way through Steve Sonheim’s photography book(Creative-Photography-Lab-Self-Expression-Mixed-Media), lab by lab.
This week is “Collection”…a “natural occurring” collection that is totally random…like everything in a junk drawer. Well, my junk drawers have way too much stuff, but I do have a small wire basket…with odds and ends of assorted things…souvenirs from trips, spare key chains, a few eggs and of course a few tiny sheep.
I tried several arrangements of the stuff, trying to make it look natural.
This first one is too boring and orderly:
This second one is better but too crowded:
The third one is best I think…everything(well almost everything!) is visible but there is some room to breathe:
We were supposed to create tension and design in the collection shot…I think having the little frog lying on top of the plastic key chain helps create that as does opening up the little woven container….
I think I needed to use wider depth of field…since the sheep on the left is not in focus nor is some of the stuff towards the back…
Interesting lesson…this was harder to do than I would have thought!!

I love the first and last – though agree if you increase your depth of field with the last one, you’ll get everything in focus, or you could focus on just one or two elements while, blurring the rest. Really nice dappled lighting, well done!

I think the 1st shot of the basket is gorgeous, the little bird in his fancy hat creates tension for me because I think he is about to fall out. I don’t think I do ‘design’ 🙂

What a fun collection! Love those tiny sheep! I agree that the last one is a good arrangement, and I like the light at the back. Actually, I liked the way it looks with everything in the basket, too!

I like it in the basket too…but figured that it doesn’t meet the “requirements” of the lab…
